Theo Denovan, PwC Australia’s Tax & Legal AI leader sat down with Scott McLiver, PwC’s AsiaPac Generative AI leader, and discussed the transformative potential of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in tax and finance. They noted that many organisations are in the early stages of AI adoption, using generalised tools like Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT Enterprise, and Google Gemini.
Scott outlined a dual strategy for AI adoption, combining readily available tools for general productivity with larger IT-driven initiatives. He introduced the concept of agentic AI, which is an evolution from basic chatbots to sophisticated systems capable of autonomously achieving objectives and integrating organisational functions. Scott predicted agentic AI, and its enhanced reasoning capabilities, as significant trends over the next 12-18 months, particularly in handling complex data and reasoning tasks within tax and legal sectors.
The conversation underscored the extraordinary potential of leveraging AI from major players and the importance of starting the AI journey with off the shelf tools and acknowledged their cost-effectiveness and efficiency. Scott noted however that the people change aspect of AI adoption is often the most challenging, requiring leadership commitment and executive education to drive transformation.
