Development of quality indicators to guide the further expansion of the National Aged Care Mandatory QI Program in residential and in-home aged care
The Australian Government Department of Health (the Department) has engaged a consortium consisting of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the Centre for Health Services Research at the University of Queensland (UQ CHSR) and the Registry of Senior Australians (ROSA) at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) to assist in the development of two projects: the expansion of the residential aged care quality indicators and the development of quality indicators for in-home aged care. These projects are intended to guide the further expansion of the National Aged Care Mandatory Quality Indicator Program (QI Program).
The consortium has been engaged to identify, assess, and pilot evidence-based quality indicators across four areas of care for residential aged care and five areas of care for in-home aged care, and examine the use of consumer experience and quality of life assessment tools for both residential and in-home care. This project commenced in September 2021.
Residential aged care services are invited to participate in the pilot to trial new quality measures for use in the expanded QI program. A six-week pilot will commence on 21 March 2022 to test quality indicators in the following four domains, as well as two measures of consumer experience and quality of life:

The quality indicator pilot for in-home aged care has been postponed to support greater alignment with the new Support at Home Program. Further information on timeframes will be made available in the coming weeks.
