My name is Jordan and I’m a third year student at the Boston University’s School of Hospitality Administration (SHA).
I went to an international studies high school in Atlanta, Georgia and as part of my studies I had the opportunity to visit eight different countries, including Australia. Here we did a full tour of the East Coast including the Fraser Island, Byron Bay and the Gold Coast, but when we got to Sydney I knew this was a place I wanted to come back to and explore more in college.
Luckily, as part of my college degree at SHA we're required to do two 400 hour work experience placements and study or travel internationally. I had my first HR experience this summer in Mumbai, working at the Taj Hotel, and a few months ago I joined a whole bunch of other BU (Boston University) students at the BU residential and academic centre in Chippendale, New South Wales. Here we take classes taught by BU faculty and live in dormitory apartments with other BU students. As part of the program I had the opportunity to choose an internship, and I was one of three students lucky enough to be selected by PwC!
I joined the Campus Recruitment Team who work to recruit university students and graduates to the firm and got the opportunity to do a little bit of everything from the get go. I first had to learn how different Sydney universities work - from their systems to their schedules - all of which differs to America!
I’ve helped put together contracts and advertise roles, I was even able to be part of the selection process for some graduates! I particularly loved helping with onboarding and seeing vacationers through to their first day of work. On induction day, I got to lead an activity about values and share my story - a real highlight!
Working at PwC has truly enhanced my overall experience of Sydney. Through this internship I was able to talk to locals every day, learn a new working style, and get immersed in the Australian culture. I was the first international intern and the team was awesome! They gave me on the job career and life advice which was so helpful. It really was like coming to work to see your family every day!. The dynamic of the team is something I really admire. I now know exactly what I will be looking for wherever I go next.
One of the PwC values is “Have a go”. I think this sums up my seven week experience perfectly. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to try new things in a safe, fun and friendly environment. This has definitely made my goals for the future much clearer. Now I am heading back to Boston for my last three semesters of college. When I get back home I am looking forward to new opportunities and doing HR in my country using everything I have learnt from people and companies across the globe.
