Steering Committee Effectiveness

Setting you up for success

Effective steering committees - a crucial component in project success

Transformation of an organisation, or a business unit within an enterprise, will prove a significant and often challenging milestone in the career of the majority of modern day executives. Well executed transformation requires a careful balance of business insight, organisational change, discipline in governance and frequently, vendor and supplier management.

Steering committees play a crucial role in the success or failure of a project. Their role is to champion change and communicate change drivers with passion and enthusiasm. The steering committee must wear the ‘enterprise hat’ and constructively navigate project delivery risk through compromise and challenge, asking the right questions and empowering delivery teams.

In both scenarios the steering committee executive must have reliable data and the sentiment of the impacted stakeholders readily available to inform decision making. The speed and accuracy with which information arrives in the right forum at the right time with the right level of granularity is fundamental to informing the right decisions. Knowing what to ask for from delivery teams is critical.

Projects are constantly challenged by their constraints, mainly time, scope and budget, meaning that time wasted by ineffective governance and steering must be avoided. The speed and accuracy of decision making by steering committee executives can be directly correlated to a project’s momentum and therefore likelihood of success.
