George Stancu

George Stancu, a Director in PwC's Digital Transformation practice was successfully appointed as a Board Director with Groomed to Go Inc in October 2019. 

Groomed to Go Inc. (Dress for Success/Smart Blokes) offers dressing and support services for people looking to rebuild their confidence and self-esteem in order to seek work. They approached us last year as part of the PwC OnBoard program, specifically seeking someone with expertise in risk, strategy, governance and finance, and technical capabilities.

George tells us more about how he's lending his advice and skills to make a difference during COVID-19.

What attracted you to the Groomed to Go role?

I have always been passionate about recruitment and the overall candidate experience, having worked in the industry before going into consulting. That, alongside the fact that Groomed to Go is part of the Dress for Success network, a charity whose impact I have witnessed over the last few years throughout my network. Their mission is for people to achieve economic independence in style by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help them thrive in work and in life. This also aligns closely with my personal values as well as PwC's mission to make an impact in society.

What has it meant for you personally?

Being the first board role in the NFP space in Australia, it was definitely daunting. I felt honoured and hope that my passion, experience and network will bring the right amount of value needed during these tough times.

What have you achieved?

Groomed to Go have started the year by taking their first steps through a Customer Relationship Management transformation which has recently gone live with the incredible support from a team of volunteers from PwC. This has enabled a vastly improved customer and volunteer experience as well as fast tracking internal processes by moving several manual steps and forms into the digital space. We are now looking at the next horizon on our digital transformation journey which will enable our strategic shift.

How have you been able to draw on your skills and expertise?

From refining our strategy for 2020 through design thinking sessions, all the way to value workshops defining the digital transformation horizons. I have looked to apply my skills and experience to the board, whilst taking the time to understand more about the NFP and grants space.

You have no doubt joined during a difficult time with COVID-19 - how are they managing during this time?

Whilst these have been indeed unprecedented times, we have taken this opportunity, with the support of some incredible volunteers from PwC and Deakin University amongst others, to completely revise our strategy and shift some parts of our model towards a social enterprise enabled operation. We have been working together with the board and our volunteers every week to prepare the organisation for this new digitally enabled operating model that will hopefully maintain the NFPs presence, and to be able to sustain the increased demand for their services post this crisis. Whilst, like every other NFP, GTG have been affected financially and operationally by this crisis, we expect the demand for their services to increase as more and more people will be looking for work opportunities.
