Henry Review
Government response lacks direction
The Henry Review was recently released against the backdrop of growing awareness of the long-term challenges facing the Australian economy. The recommendations of the Henry Review sought to address these challenges through increasing the simplicity and efficiency of Australia's tax system, which, in turn will underpin productivity increases, and strong and sustainable economic growth.
Meanwhile, the Government's highly selective adoption of the Review's recommendations means that there will be limited impact on Australia's economic performance; the measures are expected to boost GDP by 0.7 per cent. However tax reform of this scale is by nature not something that can occur overnight. Equally, this should not be an excuse for a lack of urgency. It is hoped the Government's response represents a modest beginning to a much more substantial implementation of the Henry Review recommendations over the coming years.
Download our second publication, an in depth analysis on the implications of these recommendations and the Government's response.
