Franchise Sector Indicator

Welcome to the launch of Franchise Sector Indicator, the only detailed analysis and insight in the market which looks specifically at the franchise sector. We joined with independent researchers ACA Research to compile the Indicator. ACA Research spoke to owners and key executives of franchise systems with 20 franchise units or more currently operating in Australia.

Franchising is a significant business distribution model in Australia, reported to represent more than A$60 billion in revenue and employing more than 400,000 people. We believe the Franchise Sector Indicator will be of great interest to the franchise community and the businesses which service this sector.

What did the survey tell us?

It came as no surprise that the recent economic downturn has tested businesses, however the robust franchising model of replicating a successful concept has helped businesses withstand the economic pressure.
  • Franchisors are focussing on domestic growth in the short term before eyeing acquisitions, overseas expansion and service development.
  • Franchisors are helping franchisees navigate the downturn through closer monitoring and collaboration, negotiating better terms with suppliers and increasing marketing expenditure.
  • Like the SME community in past editions of the Private Business Barometer, the franchisor sector has identified funding as the top challenge and future impediment to growth.
  • The franchise sector is optimistic about growth, with predictions of profit growth of 18% in the next 12 months and 24% over the next three years.
