Automotive Industry Government Assistance
Over the last few years there has been considerable increase in the level of government assistance provided to the Australian automotive industry.
Historically, during the 1970s there were large scale reductions in tariff rates and the removal of import quotas. Since then, there has been greater reliance by automotive businesses on budgetary assistance to support the industry, with a recent example being the introduction of the Automotive Competitiveness and Investment Scheme (ACIS) in 2001.
Further reform is expected following the Australian Government's commissioning of the Review of Australia's Automotive Industry. The Review seeks to assess challenges, overcome barriers to success and to identify as well as maximise new opportunities facing the industry.
